So said Dr. Merrell, Co-Author of ‘The Arginine Solution’ about the discovery of L-arginine and Nitric Oxide.  When you look at all the things they can do for your health (see list of health conditions and studies below)… I have to agree!  I have been fixated on arginine since 2005.  I sold my practice to shout the message.  I echo a colleague and friend Dr. Elizabeth Owings who said of arginine used in her practice, “If I hadn’t seen for myself what it can do… I wouldn’t have believed it.” (find out more about Arginine Benefits)

Here’s the problem.  One million people in this country will die of a heart attack this year.  This is like seven fully loaded commercial airplanes crashing today and everyday…with no survivors.  The next nine causes of death (including cancer, diabetes, and accidents) do not equal that toll.

Begin with the end

The endothelium that is.  I know.  Big fancy word. But it is everything when it comes to your blood vessel health.  Vanhoutte of the Mayo Clinic says,“Your only as old as your endothelium”.

The endothelium is comprised of a thin layer of endothelial cells that line the inner part of a blood vessel.  Because you have about 100,000 miles of blood vessels, the endothelium has the surface area of about eight tennis courts.  One job of the endothelium is to protect the blood vessel itself.  Since it is in direct contact with the blood, it acts as a selective filter for the blood vessel wall.

However, the endothelium is much, much more than that.  It actually makes its own heart (and body) medicine.  In 1998, a team of scientists (Richard F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro, and Ferid Murad) were given a Noble Prize in Medicine for discovering an all-important gas and its pathway produced by the endothelium called Nitric Oxide (NO).

 Say yes to NO

It was found that nitric oxide is a powerful vasodialator and relaxes the arteries.  The head of Stanford Medical School’s vascular unit, Dr. John Cooke, noted that a decrease in NO caused blood vessels to become like “Velcro”.  Not good.  Imagine Velcro-like arteries causing platelets and cholesterol to become latched on to the arterial wall.  Not to mention the potential obstruction of plaque build up.  This can cause hypertension, artery wall thickening, atherosclerosis, etc.

Conversely, as Dr. Cooke so well puts it, when the endothelium produces a healthy amount of nitric oxide, it makes artery walls smooth, elastic, and “Teflon”-like.  This is good.  Now in your minds eye, imagine blood flowing freely, smoothly and without hindrance.

Get this;  Dr. Jonathan Stamler of Duke University Medical Center,(who seems to spend all his waking hours and maybe more studying nitric oxide) says this, “It does everything, everywhere.  You cannot name major cellular response or physiological effect in which Nitric Oxide is not implicated today.  It’s involved in complex behavioral changes in the, airway relaxation, beating of the heart, dilation of blood vessels, regulation of intestinal movement, function of blood cells, the immune system, even the way fingers and arms move.”  Shazzam!  That’s a lot of stuff.

You put the arginine in, you get the NO out…

Sound hokey?  Maybe, but it’s true.  Arginine, whether made by your body or consumed (from nuts, fish, meat, legumes, eggs and such) converts into NO by your amazing endothelium.  Unfortunately, most Americans and others in developed lands do not consume enough arginine to make sufficient amounts of nitric oxide.  The result:  Sticky, damaged, velcroey arteries.

There is a silver (or better yet, Teflon) lining.  Dr. Ignarro of Nobel Prize winning scientist fame says in his book ‘NO More Heart Disease’ that if you supplement with 4-6 grams of arginine you can reverse all the damage.  That is great news!

Here is My Arginine Story

I was diagnosed in 1999 with ulcerative colitis.  If you are afflicted with this my heart goes out to you.  Because of my inflamed colon I am prone to colon cancer.  I received the wonderful news in 2006 that my scope and biopsy showed severe dysplasia (cells whacking out and heading towards cancer).  What to do about that?  My gastroenterologist (that I actually like very well) suggested my colon needed to come out.  What?  “But I am very attached to my colon!”, I said.  I told her to give me six months to make a change, and change I did.  I started taking 10 grams of arginine, 10,000 IU of vitamin D3, lots of antioxidants and more.  Guess what?  I still have my colon!  It has healed.

My best friend a few years back died of a heart attack at age 44.  My grandfather died in his mid-sixties.  I often wonder:  If I only knew then what I know now…

You no doubt have friends and/or loved ones who have passed due to a heart attack.  Today there is hope.  I encourage you to make at least 5 grams of L-arginine supplementation a part of your daily regiment.  Make every pulse count!
